The Center for Dementia Research at the Nathan S. Kline Institute (NKI) consists of a consortium of investigators who are dedicated to studies on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other major neurodegenerative diseases. A newly NIA-funded postdoctoral position for a recent Ph.D. is available immediately in the laboratory of Paul M. Mathews, Ph.D. at the NKI. This research position is part of a collaborative undertaking including Drs. Efrat Levy and Donald A Wilson, also at the NKI and NYU School of Medicine, investigating apolipoprotein E-allelic differences in the endosomal system in neurons. The goal of these studies is to understand cell biological responses to different apolipoprotein E alleles that either predispose to or protect neurons from neurodegenerative risk both early in AD as well as independently of hallmark AD pathology. Our studies examine vesicular trafficking and functional differences in the endosomal system mediated by apolipoprotein E employing multidisciplinary approaches including behavioral tests of mouse models, immunolabeling, standard biochemistry, as well as genomic, proteomic and lipidomic approaches applied to mouse brain tissue, human postmortem brain tissue, and in vitro cultured cells. Therapeutic strategies building upon the protective effects of apolipoprotein E2 are one of the long-term goals of this project.
Useful prior experience includes:
rodent husbandry including familiarity with standard behavioral assessments
cell culture, primary neuronal cultures
tissue and cell immunolabeling for confocal microscopy
PCR, Western blot, subcellular fractionation
In addition to these technical skills, the successful applicant will have a strong record of written productivity, including prior manuscripts and, potentially, fellowship applications. Appropriate grant and fellowship applications will be strongly encouraged.
As well as being highly collaborative within the three groups, the research focus of this position shares substantial synergy with a recently renewed program project involving Drs. Mathews and Levy and additional laboratories and PIs at the Nathan Kline Institute. Joint laboratory meetings, shared resources including mouse colonies, and an overall highly collaborative environment contribute to a strong training environment.
