The lab of Associate Professor Gareth Howell seeks an Associate/Lab manager to join a vibrant research team focusing on identifying novel treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. The Howell lab uses genomic and genetic approaches to understand the earliest stages of age-related diseases such as dementia and glaucoma. We are particularly interested in the mechanisms by which aging, diet and physical inactivity lead to cerebrovascular damage and neuroinflammation. The Howell Lab is also a key member of the Alzheimer’s disease Precision Modeling Center (see https://model-ad.org/MODEL-AD), a collaboration between The Jackson Laboratory, Indiana University and Sage Bionetworks. We aim to develop new models for Late Onset Alzheimer’s Disease (LOAD) using known and newly identified risk factors. The generation of these models aims to further our understanding into the complexities of LOAD, as well as creating more accurate and precise models for testing candidate therapeutic treatments.
The successful individual will be involved in a variety of research projects in collaboration with senior members of the lab. In addition, and depending on experience, will also oversee certain day to day aspects of running of the Howell lab that could include training new members on a variety of genetic, molecular biological and biochemical techniques; overseeing colony management for Howell lab mouse strains and maintaining an up to date Animal Use Summary and writing new animal protocols.
Applicants are expected to have obtained at least a Bachelors degree in a related discipline (e.g. genetics, neuroscience), preferably at least two years of relevant experience and some shown evidence of leadership qualities. Preference will be given to those individuals with experience in mouse models relevant to dementia (particularly Alzheimer’s disease), vascular biology and neuroinflammation.
