The Assistant Director of Genetics is responsible for the overall quality of genetic services. This includes reviewing test results and signing patient reports within the specified turnaround time, and interacting with referring physicians and clients to clarify information and communicate results and interpretation. The Assistant Director collaborates with the laboratory’s administration and operations to develop the genetics test menu and validate new assays.
Oversees the clinical, technical and administrative aspects of the Genetics Department.
Reviews and signs out all maternal screening assays for Down syndrome and Trisomy 18 including Integrated and Sequential Screening. Ensures that results and interpretations are accurate and appropriate.
Reviews results of molecular genetic assays related to women’s’ health.
Works with the Genetics Supervisor to maintain technical standards and provide quality assurance for the Genetics Department.
Participates in telephone consultations with referring physicians and clients. May also accompany Sales staff to present Genetics testing services.
Remains current with the literature especially related to tests being signed, and makes recommendations regarding improving or expanding tests and the test menu.
PhD or MD, ABMGG certification in Molecular Genetics or certification by other appropriate board. New York State Department of Health certificate of qualification in Genetic Testing and Fetal Defect Markers.
