The Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf (MECDHH/GBSD) is seeking a highly motivated experienced educator who possesses strong communication skills, proven leadership skills, and organizational qualities to fill a full time, 260 day position of Director of Mainstream and Deaf Education Programming in our Academic Department.
Primary Responsibilities Include: • Administrating the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf K-12 academic mainstream and deaf education programs within the four Portland Public Schools • Collaborating with Portland Public School Department faculty to plan, organize, coordinate and oversee our school’s K-12 educational programming in Portland Public Schools in order to ensure program goals, objectives and standards are established and maintained • Acting as a liaison between the evaluators, therapists and MECDHH/GBSD academic staff and Portland Public School staff to ensure the best programming for each student • Hiring, supervising, and evaluating teachers, therapists and Academic support staff • Developing, assessing, implementing and keeping abreast of curriculum requirements and student needs • Overseeing the Extended School Year (ESY) Program • Organizing and leading team meetings for students • Coordinating staff development and training programs for staff and volunteers • Monitoring the maintenance of required school records, preparing reports as needed to inform supervisors and the school board of students’ progress • Overseeing all special education processes and timelines • Preparing for and participating in Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) meetings • Coordinating technology needs and resources for K-12 staff, students and programs • Supporting collaborative residential programming for students • Coordinating the work schedules of therapists and consulting with outside therapists • Administering allocated funds in order to ensure proper use and control of department budget • Assisting the Executive Director, as a member of the Leadership Team, in the strategic planning for MECDHH/GBSD and implementation of short/long-term goals
Minimum Requirments: • Master’s Degree in Deaf Education or related field • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in Deaf education to include classroom experience • Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience • State of Maine certification as a 292 Teacher of the Deaf or related certification/licensure • Maine Director of Special Education Certification (030) or willingness to obtain • Knowledge of state and federal Special Education law • Knowledge of FERPA and guidelines for student records • Ability to coordinate deaf education programming with public schools • Proven skills in the areas of supervision and evaluation for a staff of professional, technical and clerical personnel • Ability to develop goals and objectives for educational programs • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, colleagues, parents and the deaf community • Strong management and excellent communication skills • Knowledge of curriculum development for the purpose of enhancing education for deaf students • Knowledge of bilingual/bi-modal philosophy of education • Fluency in American Sign Language preferred (or a willingness to learn)
