Director of Clinical Pathology
The Department of Pathology at Michigan Medicine (the University of Michigan Health System - UMHS) is seeking a Director of Clinical Pathology at the level of Associate Professor or Professor. Our laboratories support a large academic health system and provide laboratory testing to regional and national markets through MLabs, our reference laboratory division. In fiscal year 2016 (FY16) laboratories in our Division of Clinical Pathology performed nearly 5.5 million billable tests reflecting year-over-year growth of 6.4% with an 8.3% annual increase in gross charges. Over 600 laboratory staff and 25 faculty work together to support the clinical enterprise as well as training programs that include a top-tier residency program and fellowships in multiple laboratory medicine-related subspecialties. Our faculty, trainees, and staff are actively engaged in clinically focused and translational research yielding nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications in FY16 and over 70 invited lectures.
Candidates must be a doctor of medicine, a doctor of osteopathy, or hold a doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science and meet requirements for CLIA certification as a laboratory director. Candidates should also have experience in a leadership position that includes laboratory management and active participation in a laboratory accreditation process. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are a prerequisite. The successful candidate should have a broad understanding of all major laboratories and a demonstrated track record of collaborative and constructive relationships with other health care professionals. Preference will be given to those candidates with a solid foundation in clinical pathology that includes experience with quality, safety, continuous improvement, and service excellence. National and international recognition in a subspecialty relevant to our practice is preferred. Consideration will be limited to those candidates with an established track record of peer reviewed publications and a demonstrated commitment to education and faculty mentoring and development.
