The Division of Geriatric Medicine (DOGM) is part of the Department of Primary Care and functions across departments and colleges at UNE to advance education, research/scholarship, advocacy, patient care and community involvement in the field of geriatric medicine. The Division Chief is a Clinical Faculty position that leads this effort through teaching, curricular design and strategic initiatives within UNE and the community.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
* Engage in planning and implementation of the Division's vision, mission and strategic plan * Exercise budgetary planning, implementation and review * Partner with existing clinical services and create additional opportunities to combine clinical service and education for the Division * Partner with the Chair of Primary Care and Medical Director of MatureCare to provide a financially sound, quality, productive service in long-term care while seeking opportunities to establish an ambulatory and/or consultative or hospital service in geriatric medicine/geriatrics assessment * Provide ongoing and summative reviews of the practitioner educators, faculty, staff, programs and services of the Division under the direction of the Chair, Department of Primary Care * Participate in community relations efforts to extend and enhance the visibility and reputation of the DOGM and UNE COM
* Oversee the educational services of the Division, including the integration of geriatrics attitudes/skills/knowledge across the preclinical curriculum ~ Years I & II; and clinical curriculum ~ Years III & IV * Establish and teach in a required medical student geriatrics clerkship * Teach in and lead the expansion of geriatrics educational offerings within the COM, other UNE colleges, clinical sites and residencies, and the community, in professional and public forums for students, residents, practitioners and lay persons * Prepare the Division to apply for Association for Gerontology/Geriatrics Program of Merit (POM) Review and other innovation and/or educational awards * Participate in and seek to secure external resources to advance the goals of the Division in education, grants, research and outreach services * Oversee and expand the research/scholarship and outreach services of the Division * Serve state, regional, and national agencies, bureaus and committees of the profession * Attend UNE graduation and UNECOM White Coat Ceremony
Clinical (20%) (Description may adjust pending Dementia Evaluation Service Implementation):
* Provide direct patient care services through MatureCare and/or other clinical sites as designed through the Division * Comply with UNE and professional standards and regulations including but not limited to HIPAA, OSHA and safety training
Reports to Chair of the Department of Primary Care. Coordinates with all UNE COM department chairs, division chiefs and course directors to integrate Geriatrics across the curriculum.
* Board Certified/CAQ in Geriatrics * Board Certified in Psychiatry, Internal or Family Medicine * Research and grant experience and/or interest * Administrative accomplishments and skills * Exceptional written and oral communication skills * National organization leadership experience preferred * Staff supervisory skills * Formal and informal teaching and learner supervision and evaluation skills * Experience in budget preparation and supervision * Have or be eligible for Maine licensure to practice * Have or be eligible to acquire credentials with third party payers
