Instructor in Exercise & Sports Science & Fitness Center Director Full-time, renewable contract, non-tenure track position, begins August 1, 2018.
Faculty Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities include on-campus undergraduate courses in the Exercise and Sports Science major and general education health and physical activity courses. Courses in the Exercise and Sports Science major include Principles of Strength Training & Conditioning, Leadership In Lifetime Physical Activity, Group Exercise Leadership, Exercise and Fitness Assessment, and other selected courses. General Education and physical activity courses include Fitness and Wellness, and a range of sport and physical activity courses. Other responsibilities include active involvement within the department, student advising and mentoring (including undergraduate research), college-wide service and professional involvement.
Fitness Center Director Responsibilities: The Fitness Center Director is responsible for the organization, management, administration and supervision of all aspects of the Meredith College Fitness Center. This position is a direct report to the Dean of the School of Education, Health and Human Sciences.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, troubleshooting, and oversight of fitness center student staff; updating staff training materials, operating manuals; assisting with revising, adjusting and enforcing policies and procedures; budget management; equipment inventory and maintenance, including health and safety checks; overseeing risk management practices; keeping and compiling ongoing patron usage statistics.
Work directly with Head of the Nutrition, Health and Human Performance department or designee in accommodating Physical Education and Exercise and Sports Science classes, and with athletic director or designee in accommodating athletic training schedules.
Reassigned time is provided during the academic year, and stipend is provided for summer responsibilities.
Qualifications: Earned Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Exercise Science or related field. The successful candidate will possess 1) demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching 2) extensive knowledge of health and wellness, and promotion of physical activity 3) excellent interpersonal communication skills and 4) demonstrated record of active professional membership and involvement in professional organizations and 5) current certification as a group exercise instructor and/or health and fitness specialist from ACSM or ACE required.
