The Department of Health and Exercise Science in the Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) at Appalachian State University invites applications for a faculty position in athletic training to begin August 2019. This position is a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Responsibilities include teaching and mentoring students in the Commission on the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited athletic training program, participating in university and professional service, conducting quality research and collaborating with university and community stakeholders to support interprofessional student engagement activities.
An earned doctorate in athletic training or a related discipline is required. ABD candidates will be considered, pending successful completion of degree requirements by position start date. Other required qualifications include current athletic trainer certification by the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC) and eligibility for North Carolina state licensure, and past success in or potential for the following: a successful line of research, mentorship of student research, and innovative student-centered teaching.
Special consideration will be given to candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, and have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion to improve access to higher education for under-represented groups. Other desired but not required qualifications include: (1) at least three years of professional clinical experience, (2) evidence of teaching in a CAATE-accredited Athletic Training Program, (3) experience using problem-based learning strategies, (4) ability to teach athletic training courses covering public health concepts (health administration and informatics, epidemiology, etc.), and (5) experience with CAATE accreditation and curriculum development.
The Department of Health and Exercise Science is an interdisciplinary department housing nationally accredited and recognized programs including Bachelor of Science degrees in Athletic Training (phase out to be completed by May 2021), Exercise Science, and Public Health and Master of Science degrees in Athletic Training (beginning 2020), and Exercise Science.
As the first accredited program in the University of North Carolina system, Appalachian’s Athletic Training Program has served as the flagship athletic training program of the University of North Carolina system for over 40 years. The program has been continuously accredited and is currently accredited by the CAATE. The program is currently teaching out the accredited Bachelor’s degree program with students expected to graduate by May 2021. We will begin an entirely new and unique, two-year Master of Science in Athletic Training degree in the summer of 2020. The degree program will integrate the core competencies for healthcare professionals set forth by the IOM and the ACGME. It will include a problem-based curriculum that develops these competencies in students while incorporating the WHO ICF model and providing opportunities for interprofessional engagement. Our programmatic goal is to balance experiential learning, didactic instruction and scholarly exploration throughout the curriculum to develop evidence-based practitioners. The Program will operate out of a new, state-of-the-art, 1,770 square foot athletic training teaching laboratory as of fall 2018.
