San Francisco State University, Department of Child and Adolescent Development offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Early Childhood beginning August 2019. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include focus or specialization in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning and/or dual-language learner education. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, through diversity, to the excellence of the academic community.
The Department of Child and Adolescent Development (CAD) started as an academic program in Fall 1998 under the auspices of the Marian Wright Edelman Institute, and became a stand- alone academic department under the College of Health & Social Sciences in 2008. Through a social justice lens, CAD values teaching and experiential learning that incorporates diversity of background and experiences, current and relevant research, and high quality instruction. The CAD curriculum is designed to ensure that diversity and cultural issues are a strong and continuing theme throughout the core coursework, which prepares students to be competent professionals in their work as advocates for children, youth, and families. Our emphasis on creating a diverse workforce with a high level of knowledge and competency applies to all three concentrations (i.e., Early Childhood, School Age Child and Family, and Youth Work and Out of School Time), because these fields’ historical lack of diversity often results in a mismatch between teachers and the populations they serve. We actively engage with our stakeholders to ensure the CAD major is meeting the needs of students, the community, and professionals in the field.

Responsiblities: The position requires undergraduate teaching in child and adolescent development, mentoring and advising undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing scholarship program in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments. Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Human Development, Child Development, Cognitive Development, or a closely related field. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
Record of teaching contributions in the areas of: applied child and adolescent development, action research methods, foundations in early childhood, early childhood education curriculum, and supervision of interns
Active record of scholarship related to specialty area, and evidence of external support or the potential for external
Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works
Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under- represented communities
Record of contributing to collegial, supportive and collaborative work environments
