The Oregon Health & Science University-Portland State University School of Public Health is seeking an experienced investigator and administrator to provide leadership and strategic direction in interdisciplinary public health research. The Associate Dean of Research will work with other Associate Deans of Research and Center Directors across OHSU and PSU to foster collaboration. The Associate Dean of Research will build relationships with local, national, and international foundations and funding agencies, recruit new research faculty and oversee research operations for the SPH.
The Associate Dean for Research will also:
Support efforts to fund high quality doctoral students and facilitate dialogue among faculty and doctoral students;
Identify and promote funding sources to support research and training programs;
Manage budgetary matters related to the School’s research program;
Address compliance issues, for example IRB;
Provide collegiate guidance and collaborate with SPH unit heads and faculty to promote new research initiatives;
Develop and provide guidance and incentives for student and junior faculty excellence in research;
Provide reports on research activity on a quarterly basis or as requested;
Oversee and coordinate the SPH Research Council, comprised of senior representatives from both OHSU and PSU;
Act as liaison and represent the Dean on selected research-oriented committees and programs at the University, state, national and international levels;
Advocate for adequate resources to support various research programs, including space, software, and other support;
Maintain and foster new community partnerships to facilitate research;
Negotiate workload and deadlines for grant and scholarship development;
Prepare budget in accordance with strategic direction and program functions;
Foster research colloquia, seminars, and other scholarly activities;
Oversee the quality of doctoral student research at both participating institutions;
Advocate for research within all programs and courses of study in the SPH;
Promote research and scholarship within the SPH student body, at all levels of training—undergraduate through post-doctoral fellows;
Collaborate with existing research training grant personnel to promote public health research for multiple levels of learners;
In addition, the Associate Dean for Research will serve as a member of the Leadership Committee to advise on research policy issues and to collaborate with the leadership team to:
Establish and coordinate a mentoring program for junior faculty to enhance research productivity;
Develop and implement a strategic plan that supports the School’s research mission and increases its stature and funding; and
Ensure the School complies with accreditation criteria related to research and lead the process for accreditation in this area.
The faculty member who holds this full time position is expected to use part of his/her/their FTE effort for carrying out the duties of the Associate Dean for Research in addition to the remaining part FTE for maintaining an active academic role in the School. The Associate Dean for Research will report directly to the Dean, School of Public Health.
Qualifications for this position include the following criteria:
Earned research doctoral degree in public health research-related field/s;
Extensive experience in higher education with an emphasis in the conduct of research and grant management;
Demonstrated expertise in research development, grant writing, grant management, policy development and implementation and public speaking;
Strong program of research with demonstrated interdisciplinary research collaborations;
Experience in community-based and community-engaged research;
Demonstrated success as a Principal Investigator of peer-reviewed federal and foundation research grants;
Prior experience as NIH reviewer or with other externally-funded reviews
Substantial record of peer-reviewed research publications;
History of success in mentoring investigators at all levels of experience;
Demonstrated expertise in setting performance standards, developing metrics, and in program evaluation applied to the research enterprise;
Ability to serve as an effective liaison in geographically-diverse settings and across the health care continuum;
Knowledge of and ability to generate revenue and manage budgets with varying degrees of complexity.
