Columbia University Department of OB/GYN is seeking a board certified genetic counselor. This position will be expected to provide both prenatal and women’s cancer genetic counseling services to patients in our busy private and/or clinic high-risk practice settings.
The genetic counselor will be responsible for providing genetic counseling, coordinating follow-up visits, providing test results to patients, obtaining/reviewing medical records, and conducting outreach. Other duties may also include conducting regulatory reporting and quality assurance, and developing and assisting with implementation of clinical protocols and procedures to ensure the highest quality of patient care. He/She will collaborate with other genetic counselors, staff and physicians, and laboratory specialists as appropriate.
As an academic institution, Columbia’s Department of OB/GYN is involved in cutting edge research and we expect all staff to support and facilitate this mission following "Good Clinical Practice" guidelines and maintaining patient confidentiality according to HIPAA guidelines. The genetic counselor will participate in research activities including screening patients, discussing study participation, and obtaining informed consent for participation in genetic protocols.
The Columbia environment is one on the forefront of genetics including a newly developed genetic counseling training program opening in the fall of 2019. This position will have a role in supervising the next generation of genetic counselors.
The genetic counselor will be expected to practice at the various clinical locations of the Department within New York City and the Westchester area so local traveling will be required. Additional duties as assigned.
Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience. The ideal candidate has experience with prenatal and/or cancer genetic counseling. Background in both the provision of Genetic Counseling to patients and administration of Genetic Counseling policies and procedures in clinical practice. The position will be part of a team environment and should demonstrate a personal commitment to outstanding customer service, excellent communication skills and organizational skills, and the ability to function within a collaborative practice. Computer skills required--Microsoft Office including PowerPoint and Excel.
Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
