The College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University invites applications for Chairperson of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics to provide strategic and academic leadership. Michigan State University, the nation's original land-grant university had total research expenditures of $700M, including $434M in external funding (2017). The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is one of the premier research units in the college, with an annual research expenditure of $6M.
The Department's research mission is to conduct epidemiologic investigations of local, national and international public health importance. The department has over twenty epidemiologists and biostatisticians with expertise in cancer, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, communicable diseases, neuro-epidemiology, social epidemiology, psychiatric and substance use disorders and reproductive and perinatal epidemiology. Methodological interests include causal inference, survival analysis, health services research, computational genetics, longitudinal data analyses, missing data, comparative effectiveness research and cost-effectiveness analysis. International collaborations include colleagues in Africa, Latin America, South Asia, the Caribbean and Scandinavia. The department offers MSc and PhD degrees in both epidemiology and biostatistics, teaches epidemiology to medical students and has an undergraduate teaching program. Michigan State University provides a wealth of resources including four health colleges (Human Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing), a Division of Public Health, active collaborations with a research-oriented state health department and an established network of community-based clinical partners. The university leads several large-scale environmental health projects, including those related to the Flint Water Crisis. The department is the lead unit for the five-institution Michigan component of the NIH ECHO (Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes) project, and has research collaborations with the Van Andel Research Institute in Grand Rapids as well as many other universities and institutions.
The Chair is expected to be an innovative and visionary leader who will promote the continued growth of the department and inspire scholarship at all levels, while influencing the growth and direction of population health sciences at the university level. Through strong leadership, the Chair will be responsible for advancing the quality and scope of research, teaching and service activities of the department. The Chair will foster a productive team-based approach to research and education both within the department and across the college and university, and will be an effective advocate for faculty. We seek an individual who is a strategic thinker with the administrative skills to oversee a complex department, including financial acumen to oversee the budget, excellent communication skills, a commitment to cultural diversity and inclusion, and outstanding mentorship abilities to help enable faculty success through the promotion and tenure process.
The candidate must have a doctoral degree and be recognized as a scholar in epidemiology and/or biostatistics based on a solid track record of scholarship, teaching, and extramural research funding. The position includes a tenure system faculty appointment in the department at the level of professor.
