Leon County is located in North Central Florida adjacent to the Georgia state line and halfway between Jacksonville and Pensacola. The County has a population of 287,899 and encompasses approximately 700 square miles. The City of Tallahassee, population 190,000, is the Leon County seat, the Florida State Capital, and the only incorporated city within the County. The County is a rapidly growing area known throughout the Florida Panhandle as a center for trade and agriculture and a hub for state government. Leon County Government is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Building Official which reports to the Director of Department of Development Support and Environmental Management and supervises approximately 12 employees. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of principles, theories, policies and techniques of structural engineering and architectural design, as well as advanced knowledge of the construction regulatory process. Must be well versed in personnel management policies and procedures, as well as staff development, motivation, and training. Experience in budget preparation and implementation, resource management, and efficiency in management is needed. The Building Official must be flexible and able to deal with ever-changing multiple priorities.
Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or other construction or related field and ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in building code application, five (5) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. Requirements also include being a licensed Building Official in the State of Florida and an Electrical Plans Examiner. An architect or engineer license or an MPA or MBA degree is preferred.
