The Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences. The expected start date is July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter.
The Division of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences seeks an exceptional scholar in social theory as applied to public health with a PhD or an equivalent doctoral degree in social or health science and with expertise in public health by the time of appointment. Candidates must have an excellent record of research that advances and applies the social and behavioural sciences in the field of public health as well as evidence of excellence in teaching related to public health science. In their research, candidates must use a ‘critical’ approach to examine how individual, organizational, social, institutional, political, economic and environmental factors and underlying assumptions influence health, health equity and the fields of health promotion and public health.
We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program in public health. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach courses at the graduate level in social theory as applied to health and advanced research methods; and supervise graduate students in our MPH and PhD programs.
Candidates need to demonstrate the ability to influence policy and practice through the production of scholarship and the effective translation of knowledge. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. Evidence of the ability to obtain grant funding is required. Priority will be given to those who demonstrate outstanding ability to make significant contributions to research, teaching, and leadership in social science and health at the local, national, and international levels.
Evidence of excellence in teaching can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a description of the candidate’s experience in teaching, a statement of their teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi and materials, and strong teaching evaluations.
In their cover letter, applicants are asked to specifically address the following: evidence of scholarship within the domain of social and behavioural science as applied to public health; how their substantive domain, theoretical approach and/or methodological expertise expands upon existing expertise of faculty members; which existing courses they have experience to teach; and what new courses they would develop if hired.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
