This announcement is being used to fill two (2) vacancies. One in St. Paul and one in the Detroit Lakes.
This research scientist position will work on technical agricultural issues associated with Nitrogen Fertilizer Best Management Practices (BMPs) and subsequent impacts on groundwater quality as well as issues related to surface water impairments from agricultural sources. Activities will include coordination with researchers, stakeholders and project partners; field research and simulation modeling efforts.
This position will be responsible for the management of scientific outcomes from complex research projects. Responsibilities include Request for Proposals (RFP) development, managing grants and contracts with various research entities, scientific review on external projects, coauthoring scientific reports and manuscripts, and disseminating research outcomes to stakeholders. This position will have significant interaction with personnel from a number of local and state agencies involved in surface and groundwater protection including MPCA, MDH, BWSR, DNR, local water planners and the MDA. Position requires a strong relationship with researchers from various entities, growers, crop retailers, consultants and farm organizations.
A Master’s degree in soil science, agronomy, water resources science, hydrology, agricultural engineering or related field.
Two (2) or more years of practical experience either 1) working on soil fertility issues or agricultural conservation practices with producers and the agricultural industry, or 2) evaluating and interpreting research data regarding crop nutrient or agricultural water management.
Demonstrated advanced understanding of cropping systems common to Minnesota.
Demonstrated understanding of nutrient Best Management Practices for cropping systems common to Minnesota.
Demonstrated understanding of the linkage between nitrogen fertilizer inputs, crop response and environmental fate and transport to surface water and groundwater.
Knowledge of the Total Maximum Daily Load process.
Excellent writing skills
Ability to produce written materials appropriate for different audiences.
Ability to communicate technical scientific concepts and research findings to different audiences such as producers, agency personnel and the general public.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle record subject to review.

Advanced degree in water resources science, hydrology, soil science, agronomy, agricultural engineering or related field.
Three (3) or more years of practical experience either 1) working on soil fertility issues or agricultural conservation practices with producers and the agricultural industry, or 2) evaluating and interpreting research data regarding crop nutrient or agricultural water management.
Exceptional knowledge of the linkage between agricultural nutrient practices, crop response and environmental fate and transport to surface water and groundwater.
Advanced professional experience with evaluating water quality monitoring data, environmental monitoring instrumentation and geospatial data management, analysis and interpretation.
Knowledge of the One Watershed One Plan processes including methods and protocols used in the impaired waters process and knowledge of sediment, nutrient, pesticide and bacteria fate and transport mechanisms at multiple scales.
Demonstrated outstanding communication skills and ability to interact with researchers, extension staff and media partners.
Experience or potential to author and publish scientific reports and journal articles.
Experience or potential to manage complex research projects including work plans, budgets and contracts.
Knowledge of Minnesota statutes and federal laws pertaining to programs and services under MDA jurisdiction related to water and nutrient management.
