Fairfax County, a diverse, dynamic and growing jurisdiction in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area is seeking a highly motivated and qualified planner or engineer to work across multiple disciplines in the transportation planning field. Work assignments will focus on evaluating the transportation impacts of land development applications through a review process. Desired skills and knowledge for this position include an understanding of traffic operations, multi-modal transportation planning for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and drivers as well as site-specific and small area planning and coordination. Primary assignments will include review and analysis of the transportation characteristics of development proposals and identification and pursuit of measures to address network impacts; lead interactions with staff, the development community, citizens, advisory groups, task forces, and elected officials; and preparation of written reports and public presentations that are related to these assignments. Supervision of professional staff is also anticipated. Fairfax County faces significant transportation challenges and is seeking innovative solutions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus four years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid driver's license.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: An ideal candidate will have proven in their application through a detailed educational and work history, to be a self-motivated, dynamic, and creative with a record of generating innovative context-sensitive solutions to complex challenges in collaboration with varying groups and organizations. This person will have a background in transportation planning or a related field with experience reviewing site plans and evaluating transportation impacts from land use proposals while taking into consideration operational improvements and multimodal system enhancements through review of traffic impact analyses. A candidate with knowledge of county procedures and/or ability to do complex case research is beneficial. The candidate should be able to demonstrate experience coordinating with local, state, and federal government organizations throughout professional planning projects. Additionally, the candidate should have excellent oral and written communications skills, ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities, and ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
