The Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) and its Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation (IHPME) at the University of Toronto, invite applications for a tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Health Systems and Clinical Public Health in Asia. This is a joint appointment between the DLSPH (51%) and the IHPME (49%). The expected start date is January 1, 2020 or shortly thereafter.
The Dalla Lana School of Public Health and its Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto are seeking a scholar with the demonstrated ability to pursue and lead research and training initiatives on critical healthcare systems and population health questions in Asia. This position relates directly to the diverse set of opportunities for research and training that are emerging based on collaborations being formed with institutions in China and other countries in Asia with mandates to address the pressing needs for health professionals and health systems transformation.
Candidates must have either a PhD in Public Health, Systems Research or a related field, or equivalent additional credentialing at the doctoral level in a public health related field, such as an MD, at the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing strengths (see http://www.dlsph.utoronto.ca/). The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, a teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and the teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.
The successful applicant will have extensive knowledge of and experience in research in primary care, clinical epidemiology, population health, health policy, control of communicable and non-communicable disease, and the use of large transactional and other types of data sets generated by healthcare information systems and/or observational cohort studies and registries to produce evidence that has relevance to policy. Experience in interventional studies (e.g., quasi-experimental studies and randomized controlled trials) in primary care settings that involve the training of health professionals and patients is especially valued in this search. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellence in leadership in research and training in healthcare and health policy with a focus on the critical sector of primary care. The successful applicant will also have the demonstrated ability to communicate with senior academics, healthcare administrators, clinical leaders, and health policy-makers in Asia.
It is expected that the successful applicant will lead joint initiatives between the School and partners in Asia, including academic, government, and health services partners to establish an intellectual and practical framework for the development of new research and training collaborations that will generate evidence on best practices related to primary care and primary care systems, as well as models for training general practitioners that meet current needs, such as the initiative developing in China to train 300,000 general practitioners over the coming decade. The successful applicant will also lead a pedagogical program in primary care evaluative and comparative health systems research based at the Institute and School including leading course design and delivery in the establishment and use of data for decision making and the use of such data in health policy in Asian health systems. They will also lead and help deliver course design to support clinician education around the use of data, health services research, and clinical epidemiology, engage in graduate teaching and supervision, as well as have the ability to develop continuing education programs in Asia.
