MaineHealth is the largest health system in Maine with 10 hospitals and $2.5B in revenues. Maine Medical Center is the state’s premier referral hospital with $1.4 B in revenues and 650+ beds. MMC’s is a community hospital and a referral center with an innovative medical education partnership with Tufts University School of Medicine; fifteen residencies, and the Maine Medical Center Research Institute. The Department of Cardiac Services at MMC includes approximately 52 full-time physicians including cardiologists (pediatric and adult) and cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons, and serves over 5700 patients annually.
The Cardiovascular service line is the largest in the state of Maine and known for its great clinical care and its ability to deliver highly cost effective care. Strong leadership over the past several years have strengthened clinical outcomes and quality to competitive levels with major tertiary care centers in Boston, NYC, and beyond. Medical education and clinical research are also performing well with opportunity for growth in the clinical research area. MMC and MH seek a strong leader that will elevate this very good program to new levels of performance and success, strengthening its market position while advancing the overall cardiac care and health of the populations it serves.
SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Chief of Cardiovascular Services will demonstrate leadership excellence and effective management to build upon current strengths of the MMC Cardiac Services Department and system service line to excel in its missions of clinical care, research, education, and community engagement. In this role, the Chief will be expected to align and strengthen a thriving clinical service in the face of the changing landscape in health care; enhance clinical and basic science research; strengthen academic programs; mentor and support faculty in clinical and research activities; and reinforce the service line infrastructure fostering cohesion of providers across the system to maximize visibility and impact. The Chief will seek to standardize the quality of care delivered at all MaineHealth entities by executing a well-coordinated care model that addresses the cardiovascular needs of the communities served. Success will include expanding existing clinical programs and strengthening the marketing and branding efforts across the region to improve the reach into surrounding communities. The Chief will be based at Maine Medical Center and play a significant leadership role that will make a measurable difference in the delivery of cardiovascular care across the state of Maine and beyond.
Substantial (7-10 years) progressive cardiovascular clinical leadership experience in a similarly complex organization
Board certification by a Board approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties or the AOA
Demonstrated high level leadership skills with proven ability to cultivate collaboration and build consensus across diverse clinical and administrative stakeholders, and across organizational boundaries
Academic and/or research credentials consistent with other division heads or Chiefs
Knowledge of healthcare finance, hospital administration and strategic planning
Knowledge of process improvement methodologies
