POSITION OVERVIEW The Loss Control Consultant is responsible for the administration of loss control and risk management services and implementing and monitoring programs to assist members/insureds with reducing both frequency and severity of losses and with meeting governmental safety and health requirements.
This position is responsible for being knowledgeable in strategies and methodologies for loss control, employee safety, environment of care, risk management and patient safety. This knowledge includes a general understanding of workers’ compensation, case management, claims, quality of care and general safety. The Loss Control Consultant is expected to stay abreast of current state and federal regulations related to healthcare, workers’ compensation, general safety and patient safety and should stay apprised of OSHA, NIOSH, NFPA, FEMA, CMS Conditions of Participation, DNV and The Joint Commission standards.
In addition, the Loss Control Consultant should have broad knowledge of facility and security management, plant operations, infection prevention, employee health, nursing, quality improvement methods, infection control and sterilization, hazardous materials, emergency management, life safety, biomedical and environmental services and laboratory operations.
This Loss Control Consultant will serve in an advisory capacity for our members/insureds and will also provide continuing education by presenting classes and programs approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing along with general instruction on a broad variety of topics. This individual will provide surveys for facilities, either broad or focused in nature, depending upon their specific needs. The Loss Control Consultant will maintain a positive and mutually beneficial relationship with the Healthcare Workers’ Compensation Self Insurance Fund [HWCF] members and Inspirien Insurance Company [IIC] insureds through onsite visits, consults and representation at educational and other events. The Consultant will plan and implement educational materials and programs, prepare reports and presentations and participate in the company’s thought leadership through social media. The Consultant will collaborate with administration, claims, accounting, risk management, underwriting, and IT departments on a continual basis.
This position may require non-traditional work hours as well as some overnight travel. This individual may also be expected to market independent risk management and loss control services to non-members/non-insureds.
Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, health science, engineering, or related field and a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in loss control, safety, risk management, workers’ compensation, occupational health or a related field is required.
Knowledge of procedures needed to provide a safe work environment for workers in a healthcare environment are crucial for this position.
Knowledge of healthcare processes and regulatory requirements is preferred.
Problem solving skills in the areas of safety and behavior change are desired.
Possession of or willingness to obtain certification in CHSP, CSP, COHN, or other relevant credentials through certification is preferable.
NSC certification and ability to teach defensive driving classes are a plus.
A valid driver’s license and appropriate automobile insurance coverage is required.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners both verbally and in writing are essential.
Effective organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple concurrent assignments are a must.
The ability to function in a self-directed method is expected.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a team member are crucial for this position.
Knowledge of applicable state and Federal laws, regulations, and best practices related to healthcare, safety, and workers’ compensation is essential.
Good judgment and ability to make sound decisions are needed for this role.
The ability to adapt easily to a changing work environment will be expected.
Strong use of the entire suite of Microsoft Office software, internet and social media skills and the ability to utilize other computer software are a must.
Ability to travel extensively to all locations where HWCF and IIC have members/insureds is required.
