Job Summary: The Wells Lab at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is seeking a highly-motivated individual with strong programming/computational skills and a passion for discovery to join our research team. Our research program is directed toward precision medicine for cardiovascular disease. The overarching goal of the lab is to understand how phenotypic and genetic variation in individuals and populations contributes to variable disease susceptibility and therapeutic response, and then translate this knowledge to patient-centered, precision care. A major interest is leveraging the power of the electronic health record (EHR) for genomic and pharmacogenomics studies. Projects in our lab include analysis of large high dimensional datasets to identify genes relevant to human health, to discover unappreciated connections between diseases, and to employ machine learning approaches to identify predictive patterns in longitudinal EHR data.
The position will require collaboration with students and researchers to develop cutting edge computational approaches and provide core computational support to members of our lab. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a fast-paced, intellectually exciting environment as an integral part of a highly motivated team. Excellent communication, organizational skills, and friendly demeanor are essential. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who is intrinsically curious about human biology, loves finding patterns in big data sets, and enjoys team science. There is also potential for the successful candidate to define and lead their own projects.
We are passionate about seeking deep understanding of complex human traits through genomics. If you meet the qualifications, are eager for responsibility, and are scientifically curious, we invite you to apply!
Responsibilities will include:
Developing and documenting analytic pipelines for use by lab members.
Creating new computational tools for analyzing large genomic and clinical datasets.
Supporting members of the lab with varying computational background.
Assisting with visualization of data for manuscripts, grants, and presentations.
Assisting with grant writing.
Providing guidance to students and postdocs.
Willingness to take on additional responsibilities as they arise.
Job Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred. Must have at least 2+ years experience as full time programmer/data analyst, preferably in a scientific setting. Applicants must be comfortable working in a unix/linux cluster environment and must be fluent in R, Python, and PLINK. Knowledge of other languages such as perl and matlab are a plus, but not required. Genetic and genomic analyses are a central responsibility and knowledge of genetics/genomics is required. The strongest applicants will have familiarity with machine learning and other data science techniques.
