The Center for Infection and Immunity (CII) - one of the world’s most advanced academic centers for research in infectious disease surveillance, diagnosis and discovery in the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University (http://cii.columbia.edu/) is seeking a Assistant Lab Manager will be an integral member of the Center’s laboratory team. S/he will report to the Director and work closely with the faculty and laboratory personnel to oversee biological sample management and coordinate laboratory operations to ensure optimal performance of personnel, equipment, infrastructure and inventory.
The candidate will be responsible for implementing and maintaining systems for the tracking of all of the Center’s biological samples (both incoming and outgoing) including coordinating shipping/receipt, ensuring regulatory compliance, fulfilling shipping requirements, systematically recording data, barcoding sample tubes and containers, tracking sample movement and organization within the lab.
The incumbent will assume a leadership role and be responsible for the training of new laboratory personnel in various biological techniques including but not limited to nucleic acid extraction, RT-PCR, PCR, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning, Western Blots, ELISA, tissue culture, protein expression and serology. As such, s/he will be responsible establishing proper protocols for the on-boarding and off-boarding of laboratory staff. S/he will create and maintain laboratory Standard Operations Procedures (SOPs), training and other protocols and assist with ensuring regulatory compliance. S/he will train personnel in safety, equipment usage and be a general resource for laboratory related policies and procedures. The Staff Associate will assign and oversee the completion of laboratory maintenance tasks and will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory equipment and facility to ensure optimal functionality.
S/he will manage laboratory inventory and maintain stocks by purchasing, preparing and ensuring quality control of chemical, molecular, immunological and other laboratory supplies. S/he will be the primary interface with the administrative team for managing supply orders by ensuring orders are placed, received, unboxed, inventoried and properly stored and organized.
