Search for the Dean, Rush University Medical College and
Senior Vice President, Rush University Medical Center
Rush University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Rush University Medical College and Senior Vice President of Rush University Medical Center (Dean or SVP). This position calls for an experienced, innovative, and visionary leader at a pivotal moment within an institution known for its high-quality clinical care, growing research enterprise, innovative education programs, and deep commitment to the community. The Dean will play a major leadership role in connecting the mission and vision of the Medical College with the strategic objectives of Rush University and the rapidly developing System for Health.
Chartered in 1837, Rush Medical College has an acclaimed history as one of the first medical schools in the Midwest, and to this day, it continues to make major contributions to the field. The Medical College is deeply integrated with Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) and the Rush University System for Health, and it leverages the outstanding clinical care environment to provide in-depth clinical experiences for students. The Medical College prides itself on its renowned practitioner-teacher model, modernized curriculum, and longstanding commitment to community service, training outstanding physicians who deliver the utmost in clinical care and exposing students to inclusive environments rich in culture, perspective, and personal experiences. In addition, the institutional focus on quality and the commitment to interprofessional education position Rush as a leader in preparing future physicians to meet the health care challenges of an ever-changing and diversifying society.
The College is part of Rush University, which is one of a small number of not-for-profit universities that is dedicated entirely to health sciences. Importantly, unlike most academic medical systems, Rush has a fully integrated governance and management structure with a single board overseeing all mission components. Therefore, in a dynamic period in health care, the College has the considerable advantage of aligning its research and education programs with its clinical enterprise to discover and advance breakthroughs that make a lasting difference in the health and well-being of patients both in the Chicago area and around the world.
This is a key moment of change at Rush. In response to the institution’s increasing complexity and rapid growth, the Board of Trustees has established a new executive structure and leadership team with a principal executive guiding each of the institutional pillars: the University President, the CEO of the System for Health, and the CEO of the Rush University Medical Center. The Dean will work closely with all members of this group and will report both to the University President in their capacity as Dean and to the CEO of the Medical Center in their capacity as SVP. As the leader of the Medical College faculty and their contributions across all mission areas, the Dean and SVP also will oversee the Rush University Medical Group. Overall, the Dean is expected to ensure that the Medical College continues its ascension in prominence, ranking, and stature and that it is producing the highest quality education programs, leading discovery in key research fields, and guiding clinical programs to continued success.
Rush seeks a Dean who is ambitious and visionary about the role that an academic medical system can play in the current and future health care landscape, both in the highly competitive Chicagoland market and nationally. The ideal candidate will build strong relationships across a highly matrixed environment; communicate regularly with different constituencies; be committed to and adaptive in their approach to collaborating across the Rush System; mentor and develop faculty and staff, with a special focus on providing clear direction to department chairs; use data to inform decision-making; and advance the development of operational systems and processes.
