The Director of Risk Management (RM) serves as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team overseeing the Department’s activities across the health care setting directing and managing the daily operations of the department. The Director of RM manages all aspects of the Risk Management Department in alignment with the organization’s vision and strategies, to promote patient safety and ensure continuous review and improvement of the organization’s processes and plans.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises and coordinates all the activities and staff in the Risk Management Department
Provides 24 hour, 7 days a week availability to guide and support hospital staff as needed
Develops and maintains a collaborative relationship with the medical, nursing, administrative and ancillary departments within the institution to promote and facilitate patient safety and open communication
Provides guidance to staff on medical-legal matters in collaboration with the Office of Legal Affairs
Maintains proficiency and working knowledge of applicable 405 regulations, NYC Public Health Law, NYC Health + Hospitals Operating Procedures, NYSDOH & all other applicable regulatory reporting requirements
Quality & Performance Improvement
Coordinates the Root Cause Analysis reviews and works with the departments to draft clear, effective Risk Reduction Strategies
Works Closely with Patient Safety & Quality to monitor implementation and success of the Risk Reduction Strategies
Actively participates in Quality Assurance/Quality improvement initiatives to improve patient safety by sharing lessons learned from near miss and actual harm events
Partner with Patient Safety to conducts proactive risk assessments on near miss events
Participates in educational training for hospital staff based on identified needs to promote patient safety and reduce exposure to organizational risk
Track, trend and analyze near miss and actual harm events to identify potential areas of increased risk and target RRS to prevent actual harm
Share best practices within the organization
Claims & Litigation
Facilitates and coordinates all aspects of the pre-litigation process
Acts as a liaison with the NYC Health + Hospital’s Office of Claims and Litigation, outside counsel and NYC Health + Hospitals Claims Management Vendor to support litigation defense as indicated
Oversees review and responses to subpoenas, service of processes and legal representation requests
Provides medical malpractice claims history and guidance to providers
Implement a strong processes for sequestering medical records and managing possible products liability concerns
Additional Risk Reduction Initiatives
Dissemination of product recall or failure notifications
Assists for Policy & Procedure reviews and creations
Assists with Regulatory on site reviews as needed, including but not limited to The Justice Center, Department of Health Surveys and The Joint Commission
All candidates must possess a satisfactory equivalent of education, training and experience.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Risk Management, Health Administration, Business Administration or in a related health care specialization, and three (3) years of experience in risk management, control, and prevention, leading and implementing quality and risk management programs, managing and analyzing risk data, and performing other functions related to risk management in a hospital or a health care setting, one (1) year of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 1. A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in Risk Management in a large teaching hospital including leading and implementing quality and risk management programs, managing and analyzing risk data, and performing other functions related to risk management.
2. Maintain current licensure in respective health discipline (MD, PA, NP, RN)
3.Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM)
4.Demonstrated knowledge of CMS Sentinel Events; NYSDOH, OMH NYPORTS and Justice Center reporting requirements
