Engineering Specialist 2 – Survey Technician Oregon Department of Transportation Highway Division – Region 4 Tech Center - Survey Unit Bend, Oregon The role: The survey technician performs technical work under the supervision of a higher-level survey crew leader and region surveyor to conduct field surveys for the development, design, construction and monumentation of ODOT facilities. In this position, the successful candidate will operate sophisticated computer programs and complex surveying equipment to conduct field surveys, survey research, analysis and project drafting. A day in the life: - Measure distances, angles, and elevations; establish horizontal and vertical control for proposed and existing ODOT facilities.
- Perform detailed surveys using manual and electronic survey equipment, computers and complex software.
- Locate and tie government corners, property corners, cultural features and terrain data.
- Obtain the terrain data necessary to produce 3-dimensional topographic and cadastral maps.
- Provide work zone traffic control by flagging traffic and setting up appropriate warning signs.
- Clear brush for the running of survey lines and obtaining terrain information.
- Submit or receive field notes and electronically collected data for processing.
- Long hours on a flexible hour schedule and occasionally on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, may be required.
- Perform outdoor work the majority of the time.
- May work with hostile contractors and be confronted by members of the public.
- Subject to extreme hazards of traffic and construction equipment.
- Must work in inclement weather including storms, snow, ice and rain.
- May be required to walk or climb on rough terrain and stoop or bend around structures or equipment.
- Will be required to lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 60 lbs.
- Considerable travel to job sites within the region and as needed to other locations throughout the state.
- Frequent overnight travel will be required.
- Work schedule is four, 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday.

- Two (2) years of experience directly related to surveying.
OR - Three and one-half years (42 months) of sub-professional surveying experience.
OR - An equivalent combination of education and experience.
You will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business. You must possess and maintain a valid driver license and acceptable driving record.
