The Graduate Engineer’s primary responsibility will be to perform, geotechnical engineering investigations and studies in a timely and accurate manner within the specified budget, under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer. This will include engineering observation at new and existing building sites, direction and oversight of field and exploration staff and subcontractors for field services including occasional out of town travel, logging of geotechnical borings, classification of samples, assignments of laboratory testing, interpretation of engineering data, performing engineering calculations and the preparation of written engineering reports. Secondly responsibilities will include assisting the construction materials engineering and testing section with site observations. In addition, managing assigned projects and participating in assigned marketing responsibilities will be required. The Graduate Engineer must also possess good communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with fellow Raba Kistner employees, clients and the general public. Primary engineering discipline will involve Geotechnical Engineering and secondarily, support of the Construction Materials Engineering and Testing Section. All work performed will be under the supervision and guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer.
TECHNICIAL
Serves as a Graduate Engineer on geotechnical engineering projects including project coordination from the beginning to the end of the project and completes projects and reports in a timely and accurate manner within the specified budget
Assist in staking of boring locations and coordination of drilling activities
Performs field logging activities during drilling operations, including out of town travel
Performs data collection and field observations on facilities and forensics projects
Classifies soil samples in the laboratory, prepares hand written logs, and submits for preparation of finished boring logs
Prepares laboratory testing assignments on projects in accordance with the testing program established in the proposal
Analyzes field data, laboratory test results and performs calculations necessary for completion of engineering reports
Submits draft geotechnical or forensic engineering reports for review and final reports for co-signature of senior staff members
Through personal professional development and working with senior staff, develops a working understanding of applicable standards, specifications, and engineering practices to develop competence to review assigned engineering reports and construction documents
Performs field observation services in support of the Construction Materials Engineering and Testing Section, as well as for forensic/facilities investigations, as required
Understand, adhere and participate in the Raba Kistner Health and Safety and (BBS) Behavior Based Safety Programs and set a good safety example
Other duties as assigned by Direct Report
FINANCIAL
Reviews prebilling invoices on projects for which the engineer is assigned
Contacts and follows up with Clients on invoicing and status of payment
Within a three month period, achieves average billing level of not less than 85 percent
MARKETING
Serves as company representative and/or extension of Business Development Program while working with clients and professional organizations. Encouraged to actively participate in local ASCE, TSPE, or other professional organizations
Assists Direct Report with direct marketing of current and potential clients
LEGAL
Notifies Direct Report and Chairman of the Board of all potential disputes that may lead to legal claims or litigation
Supports Chairman of the Board, as requested, to settle disputes or defend against litigation
QUALIFICATIONS:
Certification as an Engineer-in-Training in the State of Texas and a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering
Able to obtain Texas Professional Engineers license within four (4) years
Good oral communication skills to interact with clients, design team, and staff successfully. Speaking with clarity and understanding skills are a necessity to prevent costly and time-consuming problems
Good written communication skills for preparing proposals, reports, and other engineering documents
Presents a professional appearance to best represent the company
Good organizational skills to utilize company resources efficiently and effectively
Possess valid Texas driver’s license and meet company’s auto insurability requirements
Heavy lifting and carrying (45+lbs) of tools and equipment
Walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, climbing, and repeated bending as needed while working on sites
Distinguish colors and shades of color for identification and analysis
Ability to comply with all attendance requirements as noted in most current edition of Corporate Policy Manual
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in a normal office environment as well as outside which is subject to varying weather conditions
Potential exposure to movement of heavy equipment on construction sites and hazards of dangerous chemical/solvents exposure that may require proper safety procedures be followed
Potential for exposure to noise, dust, fumes, grease and oils, radiant and electrical energy, and equipment vibration
May work on ladders and in confined spaces
May work protracted or irregular hours
Ability to travel to project sites and maneuver over rough and uneven terrain
Work related responsibilities require travel out of town to Raba Kistner offices, client offices, and project locations
May work in Level A, B, C or D personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to post-accident, random, and reasonable cause testing during employment.
