Position description: The School of Integrative Plant Science (SIPS) at Cornell University (https://sips.cals.cornell.edu) invites applications for a tenure track professorial position (60% Research: 40% Extension) in Horticulture, with emphasis on the Physiology of Fruit Crop Adaptation to Climate Change. A variety of research methods may be employed to address the complexity of plant physiology and environmental interactions with an emphasis on elucidating mechanisms underlying the interaction between fruit crops and climate change. Relevant methods may include whole plant physiological approaches; digital agriculture approaches; as well as molecular and –omics approaches. The individual is expected to collaborate with genomicists, geneticists, breeders, management researchers, post-harvest physiologists and extension educators to develop or improve practical solutions that maximize fruit-crop quality and production in NY State and beyond in the context of climate change. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the physiology of dormancy; flower and fruit development; hormonal regulations; responses to elevated carbon dioxide; drought and waterlogging; temperature stress associated with climate change; and crop-environment interactions associated with field and protected agriculture systems. The candidate is expected to develop and direct an externally funded, nationally and internationally recognized research program to support New York State and national fruit crop industries, and to strengthen Cornell's position as a global leader in fruit crop research.
The extension component will focus on developing a vibrant outreach program with national reach designed to educate the fruit crop industry and additional stakeholders on implementable actions for fruit growers to mitigate the risks associated with our changing climate. It is expected that the candidate will collaborate with faculty and extension staff within the Cornell Digital Agriculture Initiative, the Cornell Climate Smart Farming program, and Cornell Cooperative Extension to develop and extend digital tools (such as the deployment of sensor technology, data analytics, and modeled plant responses) for inclusion in a decision-making framework for fruit crop management in a changing climate. There are specific needs for faculty expertise on climate change on the Fruit and Digital Agriculture Program Work Teams.
Competitive sources of funding for research and extension include major national programs and a variety of industry organizations. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in Cornell's Digital Agriculture initiative, as well as the Cornell Climate Smart Farming Program.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Horticulture, Plant Science, Plant Physiology / Biology, Ecology or related disciplines. The candidate must be able to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural setting and create a collegial professional environment. Qualified applicants are expected to have a record indicating the potential to excel in the research and extension activities described above. Preferred qualifications include postdoctoral studies; grant writing experience; ability to work with a team; and the ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
