The Fetal and Maternal Imaging Unit of the Perinatology Research Branch [of the National Institutes of Health / Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NIH/NICHD)] and Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit, Michigan is seeking a qualified faculty member to become its Director. Such individual should have expertise in obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound, as well as a strong commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and interest in the conduction of original research, education, and training. Additional experience in fetal surgery is welcome, but not a requirement.
The Unit conducts advanced research of the fetus and mother utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and technology, including three- and four-dimensional imaging, MRI and other sonographic modalities. There is access to a high-risk patient population, research protocols for the study of fetal growth and anatomy using ultrasound and MRI, a team dedicated to the pursuit of excellence, and the availability of worldwide collaborations. The Unit also has a training program in obstetrical sonography, and an established track record of publications, innovation, and patents. The Perinatology Research Branch is housed in Detroit, Michigan, and works in close collaboration with Wayne State University, and the Detroit Medical Center. Collaborations also exist with the University of Michigan and Baylor College of Medicine.
The successful applicant should have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree, have completed residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology (at minimum), be at the Associate to full Professor level, and have demonstrated experience and expertise in fetal anatomic evaluation, fetal biometry, Doppler sonography, elastography, and volumetric sonography. The applicant is expected to participate in the training of residents, fellows, and other members of the research team. In addition, the applicant will supervise research sonographers and other research staff.
Finally, the applicant should have the academic credentials to direct a research program, and therefore, should be familiar with the concepts of study design, analysis, and reporting of research in manuscripts as well as other means of disseminating information in the scientific literature. Therefore, impeccable written and oral communication skills are required.
