WittKieffer has been retained by WellStar Health System in Atlanta, Georgia to lead the recruitment efforts for the Vice President, Academic Affairs (VPAA). This is a newly created role as WellStar has made a commitment to establishing the Office of Academic Affairs. The Vice President will be the inaugural leader of the Office of Academic Affairs and will work in collaboration with senior leadership and medical staff across a growing system to develop a comprehensive and integrated academic affairs office, ensuring a synergistic approach to learning and other strategic objectives.
WellStar Health System is the largest health system in Georgia and nationally ranked for its high-quality care, inclusive culture, and outstanding providers dedicated to providing world-class healthcare. WellStar is also one of the most complex, integrated healthcare systems in Georgia. Specialists and primary care providers work in a multi-disciplinary environment with 20,000 team members throughout the system’s 11 hospitals, 240 medical office locations, outpatient centers, health parks, cancer centers, nursing centers, and other entities, including hospice, imaging centers, urgent care locations, homecare, and a pediatric center.
The Vice President, Academic Affairs will report directly to the President of the WellStar Medical Group, Dr. Rob Schreiner. She/He will first establish an oversight structure to provide a voice for education and research within WellStar and with external partners, coordinate program development and operations, and stimulate innovation and interprofessional learning to meet future workforce needs. She/He will have executive accountability. The VPAA will take advantage of the remarkable opportunity that exists within the system to move the organization to consolidated Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs across the academic enterprise.
The VPAA will have an M.D., D.O., Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree with significant experience in academic medicine and a track record of leading change and fostering engagement. He/She will have strong business acumen and an understanding of how to advance the academic mission of an organization in a competitive environment. VPAA will demonstrate national recognition for productivity and achievement in education and/or research, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues. Strong communication and financial skills will be critical for the successful candidate as they articulate a clear vision for moving the academic mission forward in an ever-changing healthcare and education landscape.
