Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Protein Metabolism
The Children's Nutrition Research Center (CNRC) at Baylor College of Medicine invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Protein Metabolism in the laboratory of Teresa A. Davis, Ph.D. The CNRC is an internationally recognized leader in pediatric nutrition and is located in a modern, fully equipped state-of-the art research facility in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX.
The overall goal of the research program is to develop nutritional strategies to guide the feeding of at risk human infants and young pigs to promote muscle growth. Research projects include: identification of the mechanisms by which nutrients regulate protein synthesis and degradation in the neonate; discovery of the signaling components in the nutrient and growth factor signaling pathways that regulate the developmental changes in protein synthesis and degradation; identification of the impact of prematurity on growth regulation; investigation of the impact of different feeding modalities on protein synthesis, growth, and body composition during the neonatal period; and defining the impact that alterations in muscle growth resulting from dietary interventions impact the energy economy of the growing animal. Preterm and term neonatal pigs are used as translational models. The position offers the opportunity to gain technical experience in tissue and whole body protein turnover using stable- and radio-isotope methodology, pancreatic-substrate clamps, energy balance and body composition assessment, and molecular biological laboratory techniques. Candidates should have a Ph.D., M.D., or D.V.M and experience in nutrition or metabolism and animal studies with demonstrated analytical skills. Experience with animal surgery and molecular biology techniques is desirable. This position has a two year term and salary is commensurate with experience based on current NIH guidelines.
