About Case Western Reserve University
Case Western Reserve University (CWRU): CWRU, a private research-intensive university in Cleveland, Ohio, was created in 1967 by the federation of the Case Institute of Technology (founded in 1881) and Western Reserve University (founded in 1826). Its mission is to improve people’s lives through research and education. CWRU has eight comprehensive schools: Engineering; Arts and Sciences; Applied Social Sciences; Dental Medicine; Law; Medicine; Nursing; and Management. The current student population is >11,000 (49% male and 51% female) consisting of ~5,150 undergraduate, ~2,600 graduate students and ~3,900 professional students. The excess of graduate and professional students is testament to the school’s dedication to advanced training and research. International students represent 19% of the total student population. Approximately 11% self-identify as African American, Native American, Hawaiian, or Hispanic, or mixed-race/ethnicity, and 15% are of Asian descent
School of Medicine (SOM): The School of Medicine (SOM) has a long, rich history as one of the top medical schools and research-intensive institutions in the country. Since its founding in 1843, the SOM has been ...a leader in progressive medical education initiatives and a national leader in biomedical research. Students learn in an environment that fosters scientific inquiry and excitement. A new, state-of-the-art education building opened in 2019 and houses a substantial portion of the educational activities of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, the SOM (first two years), the School of Dental Medicine and the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. Co-housing these educational activities highlights CWRU’s and SOM’s commitment to innovative curriculum, advanced technologies, and integration across fields.
In 1956, CWRU instituted the first MD/PhD dual degree program (MSTP) in the US. In addition to innovative education, the SOM is a national research powerhouse, garnering nearly $280M in National Institute of Health (NIH) research funding in FY18 (combining SOM, UHHS, and CCF funding), which would rank the SOM 18th among 147 US medical schools. With 13 basic science departments and 23 clinical departments, over 30 centers and institutes, and affiliations with some of the best hospitals in the country, the SOM offers graduate students the opportunity to pursue basic and translational research in great depth. In addition to the centers and institutes directly associated with the department, prominent facilities include the Centers for AIDS Research, Global Health and Human Disease, Proteomics and Bioinformatics, Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping, and the Cleveland Center for Membrane and Structural Biology. CWRU is also home to the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCCC), now in its 28th year of continuous National Cancer Institute (NCI) funding. The CCCC represents a unique collaboration for cancer research and clinical trials among CWRU, the Cleveland Clinic (CCF) and University Hospitals Health System (UHHS). The center has nearly 350 scientists and physicians as members, and is one of just 41 nationwide to hold the NCI's designation as a comprehensive cancer center.
Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences - Mission and Vision: Our Departmental Mission is to pursue cutting-edge research, provide state-of-the-art clinical care, and to train the next generation of scientists, clinicians and educators in all aspects of contemporary genetics and genomics.
As the Department is a bridge department between the SOM and UHHS, consisting of both basic and clinical genetics/genomics, we are committed to the understanding of basic genetic and genomic principles, and the translation of human genetic discoveries obtained from basic science inquiry into clinical practice. We strive to play a leadership role to bring to fruition the era of "precision medicine" in the SOM, the region and throughout the world. We house a number of core facilities used throughout the SOM, campus and affiliated hospitals. We provide educational opportunities and training for high school, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral research and clinical training.
Located in the heart of the culturally vibrant University Circle—home to the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art and much more—there's always something to do. Plus, we're just a short drive (or bike, bus or train ride) from downtown Cleveland, home to the largest performing arts center outside Broadway, some of the top restaurants in Ohio and three professional sports teams. We promise, there's plenty to do.
