This position is full-time, Day shift, 40 hours per week.

The primary role of the Manager, Infection Prevention is to facilitate and coordinate all activities identified in the organization’s and Beth Israel Lahey Health’s infection prevention program. These activities include but are not limited to infection/communicable disease surveillance, prevention and investigation (including those associated with outbreak and pandemic events. Additionally, this position is responsible for ensuring ongoing compliance with regulatory agency expectations and to respond to current evidence-based practices pertaining to Infection Prevention.
This position reports to the Director, Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety and serves as a resource to hospital personnel in relation to issues pertaining to Infection Prevention.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Consistently demonstrates the expectations identified in the organization’s mission statement as well as the hospital’s vision and goals.
Complies with Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton’s (BID-Milton) performance standards relating to service excellence.
Responsible for overseeing/coordinating/facilitating all aspects of infection prevention program, including but not limited to the following:
Collaborating with hospital personnel (including senior leadership), Medical Staff and external agencies to develop and implement the organization’s Infection Prevention Program.
Recognizing outbreaks of hospital acquired infections and performs necessary epidemiology follow-up, attempts to discern cause, and implements necessary control measures to prevent future occurrences.
Investigating patient, visitor and employee exposures to infectious diseases and follows-up with appropriate infection prevention procedures.
Developing and implementing orientation and training for hospital employees, volunteers and medical staff as necessary.
Identifying and operationalizing infection prevention performance improvement measures, e.g. techniques in sterile procedures, hand hygiene and the use of isolation.
Evaluating infection prevention aspects of patient care products, equipment and supplies for safety.
Coordinating reporting of presence of communicable diseases to appropriate local and state health departments and agencies.
Integrating current, evidence-based practices into Infection Prevention program as necessary.
Ensuring organization compliance to external regulatory requirements relating to infection prevention (including Joint Commission Infection Prevention Chapter).
Responsible for the timely reporting of mandatory Infection Prevention data to external agencies.
Plans and develops appropriate and effective Infection Prevention feedback mechanisms with hospital employees.
Consistently compiles and presents Infection Prevention reports (inclusive of graphs and trends) in a timely manner to specific committees as necessary.
Identifies and promptly reports epidemiological variations in levels of disease to the hospital’s Infectious Disease physician, proposes solutions and implements his/her recommendations for prevention.
Collaborates with all disciplines and departments to develop area-specific policies and procedures pertinent to Infection Prevention principles.
Collaborates with Employee Health Services on following up of all infections in hospital personnel; assists in development of Employee Health Program.
Maintains documentation and appropriate records of role activities.
Collaborates with key organizational stakeholders in the development of protocols related to antibiotic stewardship.
Acts as Infection Prevention Consultant:
Facilitates Infection Prevention committee’s effectiveness by coordinating information relative to surveillance findings, problem identification and community trends.
Collaborates with the Infectious Disease physician regarding Healthcare Associated Infection monitoring and other pertinent issues.
Communicates activities/decisions to hospital departments and other committees as necessary.
Serves as an active/participating member of, and Infection Prevention Consultant to, appropriate hospital committees including but not limited to: Clinical Oversight, Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Antibiotic Stewardship. Emergency Preparedness, Safety, etc.
In consultation with hospital Infectious Disease physician, facilitates the revision and development of comprehensive infection prevention policies and procedures for all Hospital departments.
Acts as a resource and consults with employees, medical staff, Employee Health and other hospital departments as necessary regarding infection prevention issues and policies (e.g., ES, OR, ED etc.).
Responsible for Infection Prevention Surveillance:
Plans and develops surveillance methods, data collection, maintenance and reporting systems for healthcare and community acquired infections.
Analyzes surveillance findings and develops corrective action plans as necessary.
Reviews admissions to identify potential readmissions secondary to healthcare associated infections.
Reviews and researches all positive laboratory culture reports.
Maintains records pertaining to all surveillance activities.
Conducts prospective prevalence studies periodically to evaluate effectiveness of surveillance process.
Inspects environment and observes personnel activities for the purpose of detecting possible infection hazards.
Utilizes hospital approved performance improvement methodology (Plan-Do-Check-Act) when addressing identified issues pertaining to Infection Prevention.
Attends mandatory and appropriate review and educational programs (internal & external).
Adheres to Standard Precautions.
Performs job functions in a manner which promotes the safety and health of the worker, co-worker, patients, and visitors in BID-Milton.
Performs all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules and regulations as set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.

Employee maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.
May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department director.
The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood and body fluids. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the standard precautions for infection prevention. A summary list of tasks and procedures that may cause exposure to blood and body fluids is listed in the attached Physical Abilities Job Description. Also identified is the personal protective equipment that is available.
Registered Nurse licensed in the state of Massachusetts
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or Microbiology or related science.
Master’s Degree preferred in Nursing, Education, Epidemiology or related field.
Current or completion of Certification in Infection Control (CIC) within 12 months of hire.
Previous experience: 2+ years in Infection Prevention/Control.
Detail oriented, critical thinker, effective communicator with analytical abilities and strong interpersonal skills. Proficient in the use of the computer and associated software, i.e., MS products.
