Plans, implements, monitors and directs activities of the Cytogenetics program. Provides the laboratory technologists with guidance and direction on standard and specialized testing procedures. Develops, coordinates and presents educational programs and internal testing procedures. Performs clinically relevant research and analysis for improvement and advancement of nucleic acid based testing. Responsible for developing, implementing and leading major cytogenetics research projects and clinical trials. Provides consultation to physicians, participates on outside committees and prepares research study applications for submission.
Plans, implements and directs the activities of the Cytogenetics Program. Maintains an efficient workflow. Monitors testing and results for accuracy to ensure the quality control of processes within the Cytogenetics Laboratory. Interprets and issues test reports directly and/or oversees accuracy of others designated to issue reports for their interpretation and accuracy.
Provides guidance and direction to the Cytogenetics staff in proper procedures and oversees competency of all employees in the Cytogenetics Laboratory. Assists the technologist in determining the need and extent for additional and/or specialized testing and troubleshoots any major testing concerns. Collaborates equally with management in hiring, scheduling, assignment, evaluation of personnel, and issuing corrective actions. Assists in developing department budget, equipment and personnel needs.
Performs clinically relevant research and other clinical investigations in areas of infectious disease, inherited genetics, oncology, pharmacogenetics, and personalized medicine involving Spectrum Health patients and in evaluating new or advanced test methodologies.
Researches, selects, promotes and implements new procedures and technology that will assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Evaluates validations studies for all new tests and develops the corresponding policy, procedure and protocol.
Provides consultation in area of expertise to a variety of healthcare providers, including physicians, in regards to test selection, diagnosis, additional testing needs, alternative diagnosis, and potential testing limitations.
Provides up to date continuing educational opportunities for technical staff relevant to current practices of the laboratory and future directions in cytogenetics laboratory medicine. Creates an environment that stimulates an interest in new cytogenetics test development, research, creates opportunities, expectations and environment for staff to excel in their profession.
Ensures appropriate enrollment and effectively oversees, reviews, and signs-off proficiency tests sampling from the C.A.P. Assures C.A.P. inspection and accreditation requirements are met.
Enhances the reputation of the Cytogenetics program and Spectrum Health as a quality program on a local, regional, and national level by various means such as presenting lectures, workshops, poster presentations, and publications in the medical literature
Required Doctorate in Cytogenetics, M.D. or D.O.
15 years of relevant experience in technical and/or scientific experience in Cytogenetics Required
3 years of relevant experience providing work direction to technical and support staff Required
