About UT Health San Antonio
Since the inception of the Lung Program in 1987, every patient referred benefits from our strong history of world-renowned research, education, innovation, medical expertise and surgical excellence. Members of our team have performed just under 700 single and double lung transplants and are experts in their field, offering patients quality care for their advanced specialized needs. Over the past 6 years, the Lung Transplant Program has averaged 28 transplants/year. In 2019, the program performed 28 lung transplants; 12 were performed in 2020. Our lung recipients have continued to have some of the shortest waiting times in the country for transplant. To date, we are South Texas’ only lung transplant program and nationally recognized as a Center of Excellence by a number of major health plans and organizations, including BlueCross BlueShield of Texas, BlueCross BlueShield Association, OptumHealth, Cigna LifeSource, Aetna and LifeTrac. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio), one of six health institutions in The University of Texas System, is the major source of health professions education and life sciences research in South Texas a...nd is a regional center for patient care. UT Health San Antonio is a comprehensive academic health center with 3,250 students enrolled in five schools: the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Dentistry, the School of Nursing, and the School of Health Professions. The University also offers cooperative programs in public health with UT Health Houston and in Pharmacy with The University of Texas at Austin.
