The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders ( is nationally known for its graduate programs in Special Education, Speech Language Pathology, and Audiology. Department faculty are committed to addressing important problems and developing interventions that facilitate academic success, social/emotional development, autonomous communication, and sensory access and rehabilitation throughout the lifespan. Current areas of research include academic (reading, writing, math) and behavioral interventions; learning technologies; neuroimaging; speech physiology; communication technologies; amplification and perception; stuttering; and auditory and vestibular physiology. The Department has active research collaborations on campus with the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior; the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools; and the Schmoker Reading Center. Collaborations also exist with Boys Town National Research Institute, Boys Town National Research Hospital, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, and school districts.
