Summary
Faculty members are responsible for providing students with a rich, relevant and engaging academic experience. The faculty role encompasses teaching, student outcomes assessment, curriculum development, student advising, and university service. Faculty continuously engage in professional development while maintaining current expertise in the applicable content area and developing students through effective and innovative teaching and learning practices.
The Counseling Programs, which include the MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and MS in Addiction Counseling at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, RI., invite applications for a new faculty position to begin August 29, 2022. The incumbent should be able to teach graduate level counseling courses in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Addiction Counseling across the eight CACREP core areas and provide support to the program. Content taught may include teaching theoretical, clinical and practice-oriented classes in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Addiction Counseling programs.
The faculty candidate for the MS Clinical Mental Health Counseling and MS Addiction Counseling programs will have a strong record of teaching, service to the profession, and an active research and scholarship profile. Scholarship is defined broadly and may include community-based research, critical, qualitative, mixed methods, or quantitative methodologies and grant writing. Ideal candidates must demonstrate quality teaching/scholarship/service, student engagement, a commitment to collaboration, and an alignment with the counseling profession.

Essential Job Functions
Demonstrates specialized knowledge and maintains expertise in the theory, skills, and pedagogy of the applicable discipline or profession
Uses strategies and skills necessary to support student learning and prepares and delivers current and relevant course material in an understandable and motivating manner
Continually assesses course objectives and instructional methods to improve teaching and learning
Uses formative and summative assessments of student learning within assigned courses to inform instruction and improve student attainment of course objectives and program outcomes
Establishes a student and advisor relationship that provides guidance with regard to program choices and career possibilities and supports student educational growth through guided decision making
Supports the university's outcomes initiatives by working to refine and revise course assignments and evaluation tools and leading or participating in data analysis discussions to make program and course improvements
Facilitates development and revision of programs and courses, assuring alignment within the program description and outcomes, course objectives and content, as well as university curriculum standards
Attends commencement, convocation, faculty meetings, department meetings, committee meetings, professional development programs, and other university events, as applicable
Supports student enrollment and retention by participating in university events, advising student clubs and organizations, and assisting with admissions activities
Adheres to and fulfills the responsibilities of all faculty members as outlined in the faculty manual
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Earned doctorate in counselor education or a related field of study from a regionally accredited institution, or other appropriate accreditation as determined by Johnson & Wales University, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program
Counseling license in Rhode Island or ability to obtain such licensure upon hire
Demonstrated direct clinical counseling experience in clinical mental health and addiction counseling
Experience teaching at the university level, with preference for graduate level teaching in Counselor Education or related disciplines
Ability to represent the MS Clinical Mental Health Counseling and MS Addiction Counseling programs at internal university meetings and at professional and other community organizations and events as assigned
Successful candidates must be committed to working effectively with diverse student populations
Preferred Qualifications
Teaching experience at the graduate level
Work experience related to addictions and substance use disorders
Evidence of professional development, professional service and advocacy in counseling
Evidence of research and scholarly activity in counseling commensurate with the faculty role
Memberships in professional counseling organizations

Johnson & Wales University offers a variety of traditional and online masters and doctoral degree programs. Our MS in Clinical Mental Health and Addiction Counseling Programs offer an 18-month full-time program begins each year during the first week of June as a cohort model and meets in the late afternoons and evenings. This flexible schedule allows opportunities for students to work at their field placements during the day and on weekends. The majority of courses are taught by full-time faculty who represent diverse areas of expertise including clinical, school, addictions and substance abuse, grief and rehabilitation counseling and social work.
