We are recruiting an outstanding investigator to join our Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program (FIPRP). The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, an interest in firearm policy, and a demonstrated ability to use complex analyses to develop sound policy. In this position, you will have autonomy over your work and contribution, high levels of collaboration with scholars across many disciplines (e.g., public health, law, epidemiology, economics, and medicine). The individual will be responsible for: Reviewing, collecting, and conducting advanced analyses on data for research projects; provide methodologic expertise on study design and data collection for grant proposals and other research projects in the areas of firearm research; and, provide quality control on data collection methods and implementation.
Research projects will include:
• Pragmatic intervention development to prevent firearm injury, and reduce recidivism
• Observational studies on risk factors for firearm injury/death among priority populations
• Effect of laws and public policy changes on firearm injuries and deaths
Investigators at the HIPRC have conducted research on firearm-related topics such as interventions to improve safe storage of firearms, the effect of minimum age laws and driving under the influence, intimate partner violence, protection orders, and firearm relinquishment, extreme risk protection laws, and risk factors for firearm injury/death among children, adolescents, adults, individuals with mental illness, and individuals with dementia.
The Firearm Injury & Policy Research Program is a highly visible research program, funded, in part, by the State as well as other entities. This individual must have a strong analytical foundation and technical skills, strong interest in this area of research and the ability to turn data into useful information. This individual will be working quite independently but must mesh development of data methodology with other aspects of the research being conducted.
The Firearm Injury and Policy Research Program is part of the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC) of the University of Washington (UW). The HIPRC is a worldwide leader in injury prevention and control research and UW is one of the world’s preeminent public research universities. The HIPRC is a vibrant, interdisciplinary research program with faculty from medicine, public health, law, nursing, social work and public policy.
The individual must have Master’s-level degree in math, statistics, epidemiology, quantitative health or social sciences, or other relevant field; a PhD in epidemiology or other relevant field is strongly preferred. They must also have a minimum of 3 years of increasing responsibility and relevant experience in study design, research data management and analysis, preferably in firearm violence or other injury control research.
