A Research Laboratory in the Dept. of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunolgy requires a lab manager with basic accounting and business skills to provide hands-on guidance of sample management operations, including day-to-day tactical activities associated with consent, procurement, receiving and retrievals of the biorepository. The candidate will assist, create and implement sample management SOPs, (policies and procedures), as well as assist in development of strategic opportunities within the hospital/nursing staff to achieve goals. The position provides direct, hands-on guidance in a supervisory position of personnel scheduling, transportation, safety and creating and implementing logistics and sample transportation policies and procedures which result in attaining departmental milestones and achieve high levels of client satisfaction.
The position also requires advanced medical knowledge, progression of disease, medical charts and treatment regiments to assist and train staff and developing training modules for biorepository SOPs.
The position requires excellent communication with employees with varying educational backgrounds (H.S. Diploma to Master of Science) and the ability to monitor operations, recommend adjustments to work schedule to ensure coverage in all areas and a good knowledge of business practices and customer service. The position requires that the candidate be willing to assist in professional development, performance reviews and have an excellent understanding of federal grant mechanisms.

KEY FUNCTIONS:
Responsible and accountable for all activities and outcomes assigned to personnel and assisting in the development of metrics and new business processes that align with the VUMC strategy to achieve consistency of service and operations. This may include proposing recommendations and solutions that increase likelihood of consistent operational success.
Responsible for overall management and maintenance of equipment, ensure service contracts are up-to-date and equipment is in working order and all staff are appropriately trained on equipment. This includes ensuring service failures are identified and resolved appropriately.
Assist in creating actionable strategies that ensure the smooth and timely integration and quality execution of logistics and transportation needs associated with specific/specialized projects.
Assist in developing SOPs that align with NCI/ISBER/ISO Best practices, resulting in standardized and streamlined processes and efficient use of resources. This includes working with functional areas to develop and implement project resource and planning. This requires collaboration with other departments for service and improvements or service additions to the organization.
Assist in the development and innovative processes to work effectively across functional departments and resolve organization conflicts concerning people and resources. This will include monitoring processes to ensure appropriate escalation of issues and continuous, appropriate communication of issues are reported to the Program Director.
Monitor staff requests for vacation, monitor staff attendance and participation in lab activities and assign duties where applicable.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a minimum of 5 years' experience in lab management or project management, managing staff (>10 staff), medical training/knowledge required to understand treatment/clinical trials, outcome and progression of disease and treatment.
Basic accounting and business skills would also be beneficial.
