Summary: Assumes responsibility for providing a comprehensive proactive Risk Management Program for Summa Health System. This position ensures accurate loss runs to Finance, actuaries and outside consultants to assure internal resources are available for payment of claims. This position assumes responsibility for management of Middlebury Assurance Company, a wholly owned entity of Summa and oversees the Protective Services Department.
Claims/Litigation Management: Identifies, negotiates and resolves claims up to limit of authority with visitors, patients, family and outside counsel; facilitates preparation of external reporting requirements; Attends/participates in trial strategies of all medical malpractice and general liability claims brought against the System. Direct interface with outside legal counsel.
Insurance and Malpractice Responsibilities – As President of Middlebury Assurance Company, direct interface with actuary and legal consultants regarding various insurance related issues (policy change/interpretation; collaborates with Underwriting Committee of captive to develop and formulate guidelines for selection of participants to be insured by the captive, as well as responsibility for risk management activities for physicians and hospital insureds.) Currently underwrites 385+ physicians and one Joint Venture in addition to Hospital. Attends Board meetings as deemed necessary to evaluate risk of exposure regarding claims brought against physicians insured by captive.
Facilitates internal monthly preparation and analysis of claim reserves for CEO, CFO and Chief Legal Counsel in order to financially preserve the assets of the organization and appropriately reserve claims
Direct interface with excess insurance carrier for medical malpractice coverage and member of Insurance Advisory Board for AEIX; attendance at IAC meetings and member of sub-committee for selection of grant and risk management awards;
Coordinates all insurance renewals with brokers in order to provide the most comprehensive property casualty and professional liability coverage for the System.
Risk Management Education and In-Services – provides system-wide support through in-services to residents, registered nurses and other professionals on various risk management issues including written material preparation for handouts and oral in-service presentations. Facilitates monthly Risk Management Committee for clinical leaders to provide education of lessons learned from claims and to provide education to clinical leaders of magnitude of payouts on claims.
Minimum Qualifications: 1. Formal Education Required: a. Bachelor’s Degree in business or closely related field of study or equivalent in training and experience
2. Experience and Training Required: a. Ten (10) years experience in management of professional and general liability claims b. Ten (10) years experience with direct responsibility for Risk Management Program c. Three to Five years of progressive supervisory/team leadership experience preferred
3. Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications: a. Working knowledge of risk management program, State and Federal laws, regulations and guidelines b. Knowledge of civil court process c. Knowledge of insurance policies and lines of coverage d. Works cooperatively with management in advising of litigation strategies e.
