The UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program (VPRP), a unit of the School of Medicine and an internationally-recognized leader in public health research on violence and its prevention, in coordination with the California Firearm Violence Research Center (the Center), is seeking an outstanding quantitatively-oriented researcher with a doctoral or master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, sociology, criminology, or a related field, prior experience in research on violence, and prior experience in health equity and social determinants research to serve as a Research Data Analyst for a multi-disciplinary research program focused on the causes, consequences, and prevention of violence.
VPRP was founded more than 30 years ago. Our continuing mission is to develop and disseminate the scientific evidence on which informed violence prevention policy and practice are based. We are a multidisciplinary, collaborative program with multiple independent investigators. Our status as a reliable source for rigorous research and our location in Sacramento increase our ability to translate findings into practice and public policy. VPRP investigators also form the core personnel for the Center, the nation’s first publicly funded center for excellence in research on firearm violence, which was created by the State of California and is located at UC Davis.
This analyst will work as a member of our research team, primarily for projects led by Dr. Garen Wintemute. Dr. Wintemute helped develop the public health approach to violence and its prevention and directs both VPRP and the Center. The analyst will be involved in research on firearm and non-firearm violence and on the individual, social, and structural factors that shape risk for violence. Political violence and its prevention will be a major initial focus of the analyst’s work. Activities will include study design, analysis plan development; data collection, management, maintenance, and linkage; coding and data analysis; interpretation of results; literature reviews; preparation of manuscripts, oral and poster presentations, and new project proposals; and liaison with collaborators at other institutions and relevant nonprofit organizations or governmental agencies. The analyst will participate in other shared duties related to project coordination and administration as assigned. Opportunities for leadership will be offered, commensurate with the analyst’s interests, knowledge, and experience.
Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, this position may begin remotely. We welcome candidates who can navigate the challenges of remote onboarding and collaboration. Our expectation is that the appointee will join our team in Sacramento when conditions permit.
This is a career position; long-term funding is in place.
VPRP has a strong commitment to building a staff that is rich with cultural, social, and experiential diversity. Candidates who want to contribute to that goal are encouraged to apply and to identify their strengths and experiences in this area.
