The primary goal of the Risk Consultant is to provide proactive data driven risk management strategies and/or control of general and professional liability risks, effective risk treatment, performance improvement measures and improved patient safety and patient outcomes.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Participates in implementing the goals and strategic plan of the Coverys Risk Management Department.
Provides proactive, knowledgeable, consultative marketing of Coverys Risk Management products and services to insured clients and prospective insured clients. The consultant serves as a trusted advisor to support the client’s risk management and patient safety needs.
Performs risk management and patient safety consultation which includes on-site or virtual assessments and telephone advice, including Helpline, focusing on risk identification and risk reduction implementation strategies. Capable of independently performing High-Risk Clinical Assessments with mentoring as needed for specialty specific (e.g. Infection Prevention; Wounds and Hyperbaric) clinical areas in the hospital setting and all general Practice Risk Assessments with mentoring on Medical Practice Leadership Assessment (MPLA). Capable of researching questions for policyholders.
Prepares reports including recommendations, loss review and benchmarking data. Assists clients in the implementation of assessment recommendations providing proactive risk reduction guidance to mitigate exposures and improve patient safety.
Exercises discretionary judgment and utilizes appropriate research/information when acting as a resource and providing direction/consultation/education to insureds.
Demonstrates effective collaboration with Core Units such as Underwriting, Claims & Business Development.
Consults with insureds and prospective insureds (as assigned) to review and analyze relevant risk exposure data offering unique and practical solutions appropriate to the setting and a customized risk service plan and consultation. Able to develop a customized risk management strategy for each assigned client.
Participates in approved healthcare risk management organizations and stays abreast of current risk management and patient safety topics.
Maintains technical and professional expertise in order to provide current, innovative, customer focused risk management and patient safety consultation/education. Able to develop risk management and patient safety materials, with mentoring, at a professional publication level (e.g. new assessment tools, instant emails)
Provides educational presentations to facilitate the understanding and implementation of the risk management and patient safety process within the department and company, to clients and at regional meetings.
Documents all client and potential client interactions and service, within defined timeframes, utilizing the appropriate information location.
Develops and updates Coverys Risk Management materials as assigned utilizing current and professional resources. Able to independently research and develop new consulting and educational tools that are proactive, data driven, comprehensive and cutting edge.
Able to manage diverse and large accounts as assigned with high-level customer satisfaction.
Assists in meeting new business and retention goals by actively supporting other Coverys business units with client consultation and referrals. Able to market the products and services of Coverys Risk Management and Coverys Business Units to potential insureds.
Collaborates with assigned Coverys Risk Management team leads to identify, develop and implement risk management and patient safety products, education and services.
Produces accurate, quality and professional consulting reports, tools and educational materials in keeping with established timelines.
Travels and manages travel schedule so as to maximize efficiency and minimize cost.
Understands and follows client and company confidentiality and HIPAA policies.
Education, Requirements & Competencies
Bachelor’s degree in a health related field, or RN preferred. Certification in Health Care Risk Management (CPHRM), within the first year.
An understanding of health care delivery, risk management and patient safety principles and related insurance systems obtained from 5+ years of health care, risk management/patient safety and/or loss prevention experience.
Proficient in working with the following computer applications: Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel. Familiarity with SharePoint a plus.
Ability to organize, prioritize, communicate and meet established deadlines.
Travel: Overnight travel is required of this position - up to 50% travel may be expected.
