Primary Purpose
The Manager of Patient Safety Clinical Risk Management (PSCRM) leads the daily activities of the department in collaboration with the Director. Minimally, this position shall oversee all elements of Complaints and Grievances related to Quality-of-Care concerns, the Alerts and Recall Processes and general departmental operations under the supervision of the Director of Patient Safety Clinical Risk Management (e.g., team huddles/check-ins, adverse event reviews, mentoring). Maintains direct supervision of the Patient Safety Clinical Risk Managers.
Minimum Specifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree required in healthcare-related field of study with documented success and increasing level of responsibilities.
Master’s degree preferred in healthcare-related field of study from an accredited college or university.
Experience
A minimum of three (3) - Five (5) years of healthcare risk management and/or patient safety experience in an acute care facility is preferred.
A minimum of three (3) - Five (5) years of managerial/supervisory experience in the healthcare industry, preferably in healthcare risk management and/or patient safety.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
Certification through a nationally recognized accreditation board in either Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or Patient Safety (CPPS) is required upon hire.
Current licensure is required in the applicable field of study and licensure is required and must be maintained throughout employment.

Must have expertise in Adverse Event investigation, documentation, and articulation of case findings.
Must have experience in public speaking and have a comfort level in presenting to healthcare executives and workforce members of all levels.
Must be knowledgeable in accreditation standards related to specialty area (e.g., TJC, DNV) including but not limited to Sentinel Events, Culture of Safety.
Must be knowledgeable in various case / investigation methodologies (e.g., Cause Analysis including Cause and Effect mapping, Root Cause Analysis).
Must have computer skills including document creation, spreadsheet management, and database management, e.g., online recall / alert system.
Must be able to demonstrate effective management skills and techniques.
Must be well organized but flexible to manage unforeseen issues that quickly arise within the health system.
Responsibilities
Develops and maintains, in conjunction with the Director of Patient Safety Clinical Risk Management, the facility-wide Patient Safety Clinical Risk Management program, including adverse event management, case investigations, departmental goals, and performance improvement and team engagement activities as needed.
Directs the Patient Safety Clinical Risk Managers to assure effective operations. Collaborates with the Director in the delegation of supervisory duties and oversees daily operations of the department.
Assumes leadership role in initiating and facilitating interdisciplinary groups, other departments, and medical staff to ensure that Parkland Health operations meet expected standards.
Manages specified key functions within the Patient Safety Clinical Risk Management department:
Quality of Care complaints and grievances
Manufacturer / supplier recall and safety alert program.
Risk Management Information System (adverse event reporting system)
Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines related to patient safety and healthcare risk management. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management by attending seminars / workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations and/or maintaining certification/licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
Identifies and analyzes the design of jobs, work processes, workflows, etc. for the Patient Safety Clinical Risk management department and implements appropriate changes to improve effectiveness, productivity and efficiency that support the overall goals of the department and PHHS. Research issues and assists staff in developing interventions and evaluating effectiveness. Utilizes PDCA model for all patient safety related performance improvement activities.

Develops, implements, monitors, and revises annual goals and objectives for the department that support the missions and objectives of Parkland.
Selects, trains, schedules, motivates, supervises, and evaluates employees making recommendations for disciplinary actions up to and including termination, to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities. Ensures that assigned employees receive opportunities to further their knowledge.
