The Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior at the University of South Carolina (USC) Arnold School of Public Health is seeking to hire one tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in public health or a closely related field by the start date of employment. We seek individuals who can enhance our strengths, expand upon existing expertise in implementation science, promote health equity through excellent teaching and research, and deepen and expand relationships with the diverse communities with whom we work. Successful candidates will have demonstrated potential for high scholarly achievement and grantsmanship. Applicants for the rank of Assistant Professor must demonstrate strong potential for obtaining competitive funding to support a research program and serving as an effective instructor and student mentor. Applicants for the rank of Associate Professor must have a strong record of scholarship and funded research, with at least 5 years of experience as an effective instructor, mentor, and researcher by the start date of employment.
The Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior emphasizes both impactful research and meaningful community engagement. The faculty and students examine how policy, environmental, institutional, and individual actions influence and can improve the public’s health and healthcare delivery and reduce health disparities. We work collaboratively to answer pressing questions to address the public’s health. Many members of our faculty are interested in the policies and programs that encourage engagement in health behaviors that improve population, community, and individual health. These interests include physical activity, healthy eating, and health care use, as well as answering more upstream questions such as, “How do we most effectively implement policies and programs that support and promote public health?” We work in global, national, and local settings, value qualitative and quantitative research methods, and collaborate with many departments, communities, and institutions. HPEB faculty members also serve in active leadership roles for several school- and campus-wide interdisciplinary research initiatives, including the Global Health Initiative, Nutrition Consortium, Office for the Study of Aging, Consortium for Latino Health Studies, USC Big Data Health Science Center, South Carolina SmartState Center for Healthcare Quality, and SmartState Technology Center to Promote Healthy Lifestyles. USC has been designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a “doctoral institution with highest research activity” and a “community-engaged institution.”
The Department has two undergraduate minors, master’s programs (MPH, online professional MPH), doctoral (PhD) degree program, and graduate certificates in aging, global health, and health communication. Department faculty members also contribute to teaching for the Arnold School’s bachelor’s (BA, BS) program. The successful applicants will be expected to contribute to teaching of core undergraduate and graduate courses (in-person and online courses) and supervise graduate students.
