Sr Health Policy Data Analyst - SAS Programmer
Description
Vanderbilt's Department of Health Policy is seeking qualified candidates to provide faculty with data programming and management, statistical analyses, project management, and other research assistance. This position is responsible for the independent execution of major components of complex quantitative research projects in health policy, public health, or related disciplines, and utilizes advanced level research skills to perform a variety of research and operations-related activities including designing large, complex datasets, report preparation, and management of project schedules for proposals and projects.
The ideal candidate has strong data management and programming skills (SAS preferred, Stata, SQL, or R a plus), experience with administrative healthcare claims data, solid project management experience, and can provide analytic support for complex statistical analyses. The analyst will be expected to collect, compile, validate, interpret, and analyze data and trends using standard statistical practices and techniques.
This position requires a person who can work well with a number of faculty principal investigators from diverse disciplines, oversee and guide the efforts of junior team members, take initiative to gather suitable data to address policy questions, manage multiple datasets, and complete assignments in a timely manner. Some tasks will require quick turnaround times.
The responsibilities of this position will include quantitative and written data analysis on issues of current health policy interest including health reform, Medicare/Medicaid/medication spending and utilization patterns, managed care, long-term services and supports, population health, pharmacoepidemiology topics, and health care disparities.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Health policy data programming and analysis 75%
- Demonstrate expertise in data modeling, programming, and advanced analyses
- Combines data from multiple sources to derive conclusions, measures and recommendations
- Contributes to the development and execution of complex analytic plans, data specifications, reports, and tables/figures, using biostatistics and econometric methods
- Identifies, validates, extracts, and formats data for statistical analysis
- Creates, modifies, and runs complex queries and data models
- Identifies data requirements and gaps in data or statistical models
- Summarizes and interprets complex analyses
- Develops, drafts and reviews written project documents
- Prepares presentations and information for a wide variety of audiences
- Oversees the creation of charts, graphs, and tables to summarize analysis results
- Contributes to research proposals, technical reports, and peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts
- Provides guidance and supervision to junior project team members
Core data management and core programming25%
- Coordinates assignments, distribution and development of data core tasks including analytic datasets, data cleaning, data validation, and data reporting
- Participates in data core tasks and demonstrates substantial expertise in designing and writing reproducible and efficient programs to generate customized analytical datasets for research projects using large healthcare claims relational databases (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare or other administrative large claims databases)
- Uses advanced programming skills to efficiently manage and analyze data
- Responsible for designing, programming, managing and updating multiple large, complex data and relational databases
- Coordinates completion, submission and tracking of regulatory and data security materials
- Maintains detailed documentation of data management and programming code
- Ensures the integrity and security of core data
- Provides guidance and supervision to junior core team members
- Participates in recruiting and hiring of core team members
- Provides input and/or conducts performance conversations and evaluations for core team members
Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires a master's degree (or equivalent) and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. A degree in statistics, biostatistics, data science, economics, public health, or a health-related discipline is strongly preferred.
Preferred qualities and skills:
- Experience with Medicare, Medicaid, drug coverage, or other administrative claims data
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong quantitative, statistical, and data analysis skills
- Solid SAS programming skills and experience; Stata, SQL, and/or R experience a plus
- Self-starter with initiative and professional work style
