Adler University’s Couple and Family Therapy Department is excited to announce that we are looking for a Core Faculty/Clinical Training Director position to start in fall 2023. The department has a COAMFTE-accredited MA in Couple and Family Therapy (MCFT), a COAMFTE-accredited PhD in Couple and Family Therapy (CFTD), and a Certificate Sex Therapy (CST; we are approved Organization Provider II with AASECT). Adler University, a leader in social justice, is conveniently located in the downtown area of the Chicago Loop. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience.
This position is an administrative/faculty position with primary responsibility and oversight of coordinating CFT students’ practicum and internship experiences. Adler University does not have an internal clinic and students are placed in agencies, hospitals, schools, and private practices (etc.) across the Chicagoland area for the practicum in the MA and PhD. PhD students also develop internship opportunities in consultation with and approval by the Clinical Training Director. The position includes reduced instruction responsibilities as well as service and scholarship. Instruction responsibilities primarily includes supervision (individual and group) provided through our practicum seminars though courses across the department are also available. The Clinical Training Director position is a full-time 12-month* salaried position with contract.
Earned doctoral degree from a COAMFTE-accredited Couple/Marriage/Medical Family Therapy program (ABD will be considered with administrative experience)
AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation or proof of eligibility (i.e., Supervisor Candidate status, with plans for completion within the first year of employment)
A current Illinois LMFT license (or demonstration of license ability within the first year of employment)
Academic administrative/leadership experience is a plus
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Supervision through practicum seminar courses in either/both the MA and PhD programs
Teaching courses in the MA and PhD programs
Manages coverage of the practicum seminar courses and supervision during breaks from
Instruction and in summer 2 (July and August)
Manages the required practicum experiences including application, contract, evaluation, and participation for students
Works with PhD students for their required internship experiences
Manages current practicum sites including contracts with the site and supervisor
Manages the cycle of assessment (evaluations of student, site, and supervisor) of clinical training
Maintains regular site visits as well as manages any student concerns/issues/crises throughout
practicum and internship
Develops prospective practicum experiences securing agreements with sites and supervisors insuring they meet the requirements of the programs
Updates the CFT Department Clinical Training Manual (Fall 2023 update is available upon request)
Maintains practicum database
Trains students and supervisors on Time2Track, a clinical experience tracking tool
Works closely with the CFT Department Chair to maintain consistency across academic and clinical requirements/opportunities across programs
Participates in faculty governance (service) including Faculty Council and a faculty committee
Chairs and serves as committee member on dissertations in the PhD program
Reviews Doctoral Qualifying Exams
Participates in recruiting and admissions including interview activities for the department
Provides service to the university and the field through state, regional, and national associations
Pursues a scholarly agenda including presentations and publications
Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair
Additional Duties/ Skills:
Participation in faculty and department governance occurs on Tuesdays (in-person and virtually). Courses including practicum seminars are offered in the department between 9-4pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays with some exceptions depending on need and projected growth of the department. Elective courses are offered on Fridays and sometimes weekends as scheduled by the instructor. Core faculty are expected to be on campus three days a week. Practicum seminars in the MCFT and CFTD programs are capped at 6 to meet COAMFTE’s definition of group supervision and practicum seminars as well as the state of Illinois’s licensure definitions of group supervision. Courses are offered in fall, spring, and summer semesters. Summer semester is an abbreviated term in May and June and supervision in the MA program (i.e., practicum seminars) runs through July and August.
Work Environment (Physical Demands):
This is an in-person on campus (minimum of 3 days/week) position. The usual and customary methods of performing the job functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
