Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Bioethics has an open position for a clinical ethicist who will provide consultation for patients, families, and healthcare providers at bedside, and support broader ethics-related initiatives in the institution and our community. Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellence and enthusiasm for providing high quality clinical ethics consultation and bring a unique set of skills and experience that they are able to leverage into clinical ethics-based initiatives. The successful applicant will join the Professional Staff (equivalent to Faculty) and provide leadership in developing and promoting ethics programming across the multinational healthcare system. Members of the multidisciplinary Center collaboratively engage in exciting new research and programming, exemplifying collegiality, intra-professional teamwork, patient-facing communication, and leadership. Professional Staff in the Center are eligible for appointment in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and have access to a thriving bioethics community in Northeast Ohio and beyond.

Responsibilities:

As a member of the Center for Bioethics, a Staff Ethicist will:

• Deliver high-quality ethics consultation across the Northeast Ohio Cleveland Clinic system by contributing to the high-volume Ethical Consultation Service (700+ consults/year).
• Support the education and training of ethics fellows and clinical trainees.
• Engage in dissemination of bioethics skills and knowledge and clarifying the role of the bioethicist through education aimed at a variety of audiences, such as case discussions, grand rounds, and invited lectures.
• Promote organizational ethics and ethical policy development throughout the system by identifying areas of moral concern, modeling ethical leadership, offering reflection and recommendations on ethically complex matters.
• Support the ethics program infrastructure through a commitment to contributing to the innovation of bioethics services at Cleveland Clinic.
• Contribute to the development of the field through scholarship, including collaborative efforts to publish on Center developments and innovations.
• Maintain professional development by staying up to date on knowledge of literature and developments in the field of bioethics, engaging in the local and national bioethics community, and working to enhance professional skills.

Qualifications:

• A terminal degree (PhD, JD, MD/DO, DNP, or field-specific equivalent) is required.
• Professional experience working in clinical environments, providing high-quality ethics consultation, serving on an engaged ethics committee, and robust academic achievement.
• Effective oral and written communication skills, proficiency with telecommunication technology, experience and excellence in education and mentoring, and a collaborative workstyle.
• Successful candidates would be expected to embrace Cleveland Clinic’s patient-centered values: quality and safety, empathy, teamwork, integrity, inclusion, and innovation.
• Formal fellowship training in clinical ethics is preferred for early career applicants.
