We are seeking a candidate for a full-time genetic counseling position within the Clinical Genetics Division at Columbia University Medical Center. The candidate with work alongside a team of genetic counselors, geneticists, nurse practitioners, dietician and social worker. Under the supervision of the Director of Genetics and Clinic Coordinator, the genetic counselor will primarily be responsible for the clinical care of pediatric and adult patients. Opportunities in administration, supervision, teaching and research are available for appropriate candidates. Faculty titles are given to appropriately qualified staff.
Essential Job Duties/Skills
Clinical Services
- Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative
- Offers genetic counseling and follow-up services for outpatients.
- Works closely with Medical Geneticist in pediatric clinics providing evaluations, risk assessments and counseling for a range of conditions.
- Assists patients with rare genetic disorders in identifying resources and research options.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Uses communication techniques that are age-appropriate.
Organizational/Managerial
- Participates in the division’s performance improvement activities.
- Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
- Maintains a written log of caseload for follow-up and research.
Educational/Professional Development
- Assists in teaching and training of graduate level genetic counseling students and other trainees.
- Provides lectures and workshops to both professional and non-professional groups.
- Develops educational materials.
- Meets regulatory, certification and annual health assessment requirements.
- Maintains ABGC certification through continued education. .
Communication/Relationship
- Demonstrates a professional, courteous and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families, significant others and colleagues.
- Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community.
- Serves as a resource person for genetic screening, teaching and counseling.
- Participates in community education programs for genetic disease.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned including research opportunities.
- Practices cultural competency in interaction and communication with our diverse patient population and staff
Qualifications Required (R) Preferred (P)
Education
(R) Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling/Human Genetics from a program by the American Board of Genetic Counseling
Licensure/Certifications
Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
Work Experience
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively
Collaborative, adaptable team player
